WALLPAPERING .... A CEILING?

The true test of the strength of a relationship is through wallpapering a ceiling TOGETHER!
I had no choice but to drag Hubs into this as there was no way I could possibly complete this task with only one set of arms!  Our little entryway possesses a lot of detail but the ceiling was plain.  I kept looking up and thinking that maybe I could paint it a different colour or maybe find some tin ceiling tiles to dress it up somehow.  It's only a very small space so whatever I planned on doing, it wouldn't be too difficult.

While out at a Big Box store I came across this paintable wallpaper.  I've seen it many times before but never really look at it carefully.

The pattern of this particular wallpaper looked somewhat similar to tin ceiling tiles!

At $19.99 a roll, I thought it would be a great, inexpensive solution.

We measured out the ceiling and took the wallpaper outside to organize it on the driveway.

Then we headed inside to start applying our first piece.  Hubs & I had to squish together in the entrance way, each working on a separate ladder!
The first piece went on so smoothly. We were LOVIN this project!

The second piece, well, let's just say, we were being tested!  Tested for patience, understanding, mutual respect, etc. as somehow in the process the wallpaper was now backwards and not matching the strip that was already applied and drying quickly on our ceiling!

Once the "I don't want to do this anymore" & "Why do I always have to help with your projects" and the "How stupid can you be" 's got out of the way, we were off to the races! We switched all the pieces around and it now matched beautifully!

I loved it even before we painted it!

I had a small can of blue paint in the basement that I thought would look fabulous on the ceiling.

It was delicate work painting around the ceiling crown.

Ta da ..... done!

The light fixture was purchased new after we moved into the house.
The ceiling even looks nicer after dark!Almost like a tin ceiling!
Another project complete ... another disaster averted!

Cheers ~ Lisa ~

  1. Oh, I just love it!! And I can truly appreciate how difficult it is to wallpaper a ceiling. My dad and I wallpapered my bedroom ceiling when I was a teenager. Loads of fun!! : )

  2. Wow!! Does that ever look great!! I'm glad you both survived this test. Many years ago my mom & MIL helped me wallpaper the kitchen ceiling. Immediately after our big accomplishment, hubs was up in the attic working on wiring when -- you guessed it, he stepped through the kitchen ceiling. Everyone was fine, but then, more work. Patching the hole, and re-papering! I don't know that I'm up for a project like that again, but definitely would consider this wallpaper for between my cabinets. Thanks for the inspiration! I love it!!-Tammy

  4. Lisa,
You and hubs did an incredible job!!!! You rock!!! Your hallway ceiling now looks spectacular! I love the pale blue colour.
I have wanted to do our kitchen ceiling with the "anaglypta" wall paper for years. I'm thinking tho, that after papering a 12 X 20 kitchen ceiling that our 27 year marriage may be in trouble.....so I just keep on dreaming!!! LOL!!
I have finshed the cookbook bookcase and will be posting it shortly.

  5. What an amazing job you did. I never thought about wallpapering the ceiling, but it looks great. I have always loved that kind of wallpaper, but so far I only use it on crafts. I have also used it to cover cardboard magazine holders, too. I have a tutorial on my blog. Maybe with your leftovers you can use the pieces to make little things.

  17. Lisa,

Love the wallpaper on the ceiling! And the color... well it couldn't get any better than that. I've been thinking about painting a certain ceiling kind of an aquaish blue, now I KNOW I should.

Your work crew sounds like mine. A little bickering and everything!

    Thanks for the award too!
